The Holy Spirit was not just given to speak in tongues but to speak the word
In Acts 1:8 Jesus told the disciples, 'You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you and YOU SHALL BE WITNESSES unto me...'. That was his principal work, to make the disciples bold witness of the Lord to the world! And so, in Acts 2:1-4,14,37-40 after the Holy Spirit came, Peter stood in the midst of pilgrimages that have come from all over the world to the feast in Jerusalem and declare the counsel of God without fear with so much impact that 3000 souls gave their lives to Christ!
‘And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance…...But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words…. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.’
Now what impact that was! To put this in perspective you must understand this was the same Peter that denied Jesus three times just before his crucifixion! One encounter with the Holy Spirit has turned the denier of the word to its ark bearer!
Again, in Acts 4:4-8, the bible says that filled with the Holy Spirit, the Apostles spoke the word.
‘Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes, And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, by what power, or by what name, have ye done this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel’
Further down in Acts 4:31, filled with the Holy Spirit despite threats to their life, the Apostles spoke the word boldly.
‘And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spoke the word of God with boldness’
The Holy Spirit was not just given to make us speak in tongues but to speak the word to the world!
It’s clear from the foregoing that the anointing was given to make us announcer of the word to the world!
Even Jesus, after he got the anointing, in Luke 4:14-19, went to the temple, this time not as a lay reader, which before was his custom, but as the main preacher! He spoke the word boldly!
Believers today speak more tongues in the church than they speak the word to the world!
The Holy Spirit was not just given to make us speak in tongues but to speak the word to the world! (Acts 1:8)
The Holy Spirit will never be ashamed to testify of Jesus and witness him to the world. If we have the Holy Spirit we would never be shy or ashamed of speaking the word. Like Paul said, ' I am not ASHAMED of the gospel of the lord Jesus, for it is the POWER of God unto salvation...'(Romans 1:16).
"It is foolishness to be SHAMEFUL OF WHAT IS GAINFUL!". Speak the word today.
