OF GOOD WORKS(1)

‘Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven'(Matthew 5:15-16)

Through our good works, the world can identify with our good God. When our light shines God is glorified, when we keep that light we deprive the world the opportunity of seeing the awesomeness of our God. Furthermore in 1 Peter 2:12 the Apostle re-iterated this truth, "Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation."

In other words, people may be able to speak against us but one thing the world shouldn't be able to deny is our good works! Or if you read that verse again it also translates to mean that it is good for us to have good words - "having your conversation honest", but in addition we must also have good works because essentially it is our works that prove our worth!

Anyone can disprove our words but no one should be able to deny our works. Jesus in John 10:32 said many good works have I shown you from my Father which one do you have issues with? And the scribes told him, we can't disprove your works it is your words that we want to contest (John 10:32-33)

The Christian walk is a call to works and not just words. With our words, we can preach love but with our works, we can demonstrate love! The great commission is carried out by our words while the great commandment is carried out by our works! People may not readily pay attention to our words but they cannot deny our works!

When that corps member who served in one church I was privileged to pastor in the East saw how a pregnant woman lost her life due to the inability of the hospital to gain access to water, he vowed he was not going to leave that community without water. For the one year, he served he deployed every resource and energy at his disposal to make that happen. And eventually, it did happen. And when the water made by this corps member was commissioned, he became not only the best corp member for that year but the world saw his good works and they glorify his father who is in heaven with many hearts turning to the Lord! This is how the Lord intends for us to live.

Our good works must show in our character (Titus 1:16). ‘They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.’

It must show in our generosity and distribution (1 Timothy 6:18). ‘That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;’

It must show in the good service that we render to those around us (1 Timothy 5:10). ‘Well reported of for good works;  if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.’

With both our words and our works we can prove our worth to the world. This is how we show the fullness of the gospel to the world!
