When our lives are built on the word then we can overcome the storms in the world. Matthew 7:24 tells us that those who hear and do the words of the masters are building their lives on a rock that cannot be moved. This is what the revelations of Jesus will do to us: wisened up our hearts for every circumstance of life! With his words in our hearts, we are ready for any challenges on the earth!
Apart from the "I am" statements of Jesus, there are the parables of Jesus which we should get into much later, but there is the matter of the greatest commandment and the greatest commission, and so from today we will begin to look at the greatest commandment.
There are about 613 laws that were given during the times of Moses, and in a bid to entrapped Jesus, He was asked which the greatest commandment of these laws is. Jesus answers the question by quoting the Shema, a passage out of Deuteronomy Chapter 6, a well-known passage in Judaism. It is said that the Jews quote these words to themselves two times a day.
"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." - Matthew 22:37-40
Jesus is saying, in other words, there are no needs to fulfill all the other laws, no need to know all of them, once you can fulfill the law of love you have fulfilled the law of life, for 'on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets'. The word 'hang' means to suspend upon. All other laws are suspended on, received their lives, support and justification from these two laws.
Therefore the law of love is the law of life! However, thousands of years after these words were spoken, the problem of the world still remains the problem of love! Yes, we might have written millions of songs on the subject of love and probably millions of books, but still, the world has a love problem! Jesus put that in perspective for us, love God and love your neighbor this is all that God and life demands of you!
Why is love important to God? Love is the very nature of God! The word says, "God is love"(1 John 4:8) and his relationship with us today via his son Jesus was precipitated and initiated by love.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten...."(John 3:16).Without His love we would have been lost, for the love of God is the hope of the world! So he commands us to reciprocate that love to the Lord, but much more important, to fill the world with His love! The greatest message of the Church is the message of love! But much more than preaching it, we must live it! When we live this love, we will rescue the world!
So I pray today that "the Lord thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live" (Deuteronomy 30:6). There is no life without love!
