Without power, the church has no identity
This was a church born on Pentecost day. Pentecost up until that day was a day of festivity. But once the church was born on that day, the day of power, the identity of the church was defined: a people of grace and power! From that moment onward Pentecost was no longer associated with festivity but with power! Pentecost was no longer a day of celebration but a day of unction!
The manifestation of power is what demonstrates the kingdom of our God. Jesus said if I by the Spirit of God cast out devils, then the kingdom of God has come upon you(Matthew 12:28). What announces this kingdom is power, not grammar!
Without power, the church has no mission to the world. That's why after teaching them everything for 3 and half years he still told them - wait, tarry, linger until the power comes(Luke 24:49) Only then can your mission begin!
‘49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high’
At the foundation of the church of God is the power of God!
Today the church is trying to be many things to the world: spiritual center, enlightenment center, entertainment center, social center, networking center, business center and so many things rolled into one: a one-stop center for all things? As good as that may sound still it contradicts the original purpose of God for His church!
The master, while He was here on earth lend us insight into what the purpose and destiny of the church ought to be. The scene where he enters into the temple and saw diver’s kinds of buying and selling is reminiscent of what the modern church has become: a place of selling many things! The place that offers many things but nothing in particular! Jesus swept the church clean and redefined what the church should be: a place of prayer! A house of prayer!
“12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, 13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves"(Matthew 21:13)
He used prayer because that is the generator of God's power! It is through asking that we are anointed! John 7:37, Acts 1:14-Acts 2:1-4, Acts 4:29-31 James 5:16-18.
‘37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)’
‘14 these all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren’ (Acts 1:14)
‘1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance’ (Acts 2;1-4)
‘29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, 30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. 31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness’
In trying to be many things to the world the church has lost its real footing in the world. We have a coat of many colors but no distinct color!
It is through prayer that we are empowered! The church is the house of prayer and consequently the house of power!
And we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. We are to be the house of prayer and the embodiment of God's power to the world. Manifesting our sonship in the midst of darkness! This is our destiny!
In trying to be many things to the world the church has lost its real footing in the world. We have a coat of many colors but no distinct color! But the church of church has been pre-ordained, to be a conveyor and purveyor of God’s power and wisdom to the world. In the midst of the present craziness of the church to be like the world, we must recover our lost identity, our real identity!
We, like the apostles of old, must cry out for a fresh baptism of God’s power. Like David, it must be the utmost of our desire!
David cried in prayer, Oh Lord my soul thirsteth for the and my flesh longeth for thee to see thy power and thy glory! How many longs for his power? Cry out to him today!
